When I was lying with my nose in the warm sand, inhaling the smell of gunpowder and burned plastic, minutes from being directly involved in a war I wasn’t prepared for – I experienced the darkest moment of my life. I knew then and there that from that moment, my life had taken a new turn. Maybe I would be dead in a few seconds; maybe I would make it. But no matter what, I knew that I would never fire my weapon into those human bodies down the road, if they came our way. Today, 20 years later, I am very proud of that decision.
